چکیده
Overview Varicose veins of the lower extremities are found in the superficial venous system which includes the great saphenous vein (GSV) and the small saphenous vein (SSV), and their tributaries. One-way valves are present in the superficial venous system. These valves prevent backward flow of blood within the vein (reflux) and keep the blood moving toward the heart. The condition of improperly functioning valves and the resultant valve reflux (incompetence) in the superficial venous system is known as chronic venous insufficiency. Varicose veins are the most frequent manifestation of chronic venous insufficiency. (Tassiopoulos et al., 2000; Nicolaides AN, 2000) Approximately 25% of the population has lower extremity varicose veins, and age is the only consistently identified risk factor. The incidence of varicose veins increases linearly with age. Varicose veins have long been considered a cosmetic problem however varicose veins are frequently the cause of disability, loss of limb and loss of life.

متن کاملIntervention for Varicose Veins of Lower Extremities Lowers the Brain Natriuretic Peptide Values in Varicose Vein Patients
Objective: To evaluate the relationship between varicose veins and heart failure, both of which cause edema of lower extremities. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 150 patients who underwent intervention for varicose veins of lower extremities between December 2012 and October 2015, and perioperative data were retrospectively investigated. Results: Of the 150 patients, 104 (69.3%) were females...
متن کاملPurple, stiff lesions resembling varicose veins on lower limb: certainly consider Kaposi sarcoma
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) typically presents multiple cutaneous lesions of the lower extremities. Lesions can rarely mimic varicose veins without venous insufficiency, vascular or stasis ulcers. As the initial diagnosis of KS is generally determined clinically, a high index of suspicion and palpation of lesions are necessary for all patients with atypical presentations of varicose-like lesions of l...
متن کاملMR Venography for the Assessment of Deep Vein Thrombosis in Lower Extremities with Varicose Veins.
OBJECTIVE To assess the performance of magnetic resonance venography (MRV) for pelvis and deep vein thrombosis in the lower extremities before surgical interventions for varicose veins. MATERIALS AND METHODS We enrolled 72 patients who underwent MRV and ultrasonography before stripping for varicose veins of lower extremities. All images of the deep venous systems were evaluated by time-of-fli...
متن کاملA clinical study on serial retrograde venography of the lower extremity with varicose veins.
Venography furnishes a map of the otherwise invisible deep veins of the extremities, discloses pathological changes, localizes the communicating veins, and tests the function of veins and valves. This clinical study, was carried out to evaluate the serial retrograde venography of the lower extremities with varicose veins, using the serial long film changer with a tilt. Forty-three extremities w...
